On 1st April, I attended the TCSC (Tampere Center for Scientific Computing) kick-off seminar at Paidia, Nokia Arena – and I am happy that I went. It is a bit of a change to my normal day. A half-day get-together of researchers, IT staff, and scientists from Tampere and Aalto Universities, all of them united by a topic that is rarely the focus of attention. Here is my try to articulate what the day was really like and what made me remember it.<\/b><\/div>\n

What Was This Seminar About?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The event was organized around three connected themes – the TCSC research infrastructure, Scientific IT, and Research Software Engineering (RSE). It sounds very technical on paper, doesn’t it? But if you look at it from the practical side, it was really just about one thing: the people and systems that enable research to be conducted.     Opening Words – Professor Matti Nykter\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

    The seminar opened with Professor Matti Nykter remarks – Professor of Bioinformatics at Tampere University Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, and the academic lead of TCSC. His opening words really did set the tone for everything that followed. He talked about the long road to building proper high-performance computing infrastructure at university level. This hasn’t happened overnight – about 20 years of effort have gone into it. He walked through three pillars that sit at the heart of this effort: microscopy, Nexus, and TCSC – each one serving different research needs, but all of them kept running through a shared effort between faculties and IT teams. Funding comes from the university, and the encouraging part is that it’s been growing.\u00a0What I really noticed was a reference to Aalto University part in all of this. Aalto Science-IT initiative was launched in 2009 to facilitate computational research infrastructure. Hence, it was among the first Finnish universities to enter this arena. This know-how and way of doing the things has evidently been a source of inspiration for Tampere in the development of its own. Instead of beginning from scratch or operating in isolated silos, Aalto and Tampere universities are both engaging in mutual learning and support – such cross-university collaboration is indeed what the field of this area needs.<\/p>\n

    Introduction to TCSC – Tomi H\u00e4kkinen<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Tomi H\u00e4kkinen gave an overview of what TCSC actually is and who it serves. The numbers were bigger than I expected – around 90 research groups and approximately 300 users working across machine learning, AI, and simulations. The infrastructure includes NVIDIA GPUs, AI clusters, and a dedicated environment called SDAE for handling sensitive medical data. Tomi was also honest about the current limitations: long-term storage is a challenge, continuous job running is not always possible, and managing resources at this scale is genuinely difficult. But the direction is clear – TCSC is being built to serve a wide audience across research disciplines, and the ambition is there.<\/p>\n

    Keynote: What Is RSE? – Richard Darst, Aalto University<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Richard Darst from Aalto University delivered the keynote on Research Software Engineering. His talk was one of the most practically useful of the day for me. Research Software Engineers (RSEs) essentially sit between researchers and IT. They help researchers get access to the resources they need, faster than going through traditional IT channels. As he put it simply, time is money in research, and having someone who understands both the research problem and the technical infrastructure makes a real difference. Richard also spoke about how Tampere and Aalto are already collaborating, sharing projects and mentoring each other’s teams. There was also a suggestion raised about a national RSE centre, though the focus for now remains on building this from the ground up at the university level, which makes sense.<\/p>\n

    Scientific IT at Tampere University – Pasi Kyt\u00f6harju<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Pasi Kyt\u00f6harju gave a clear picture of what Scientific IT covers at Tampere University, essentially the full digital infrastructure of research: data management, software support, secure data processing, shared storage, automation, and the long-term data repository. It’s a wide remit and an important one. Research data management in particular – making sure data is stored properly, handled securely, and can be reused – is something that often gets treated as an afterthought. Hearing it presented as a core service was reassuring.<\/p>\n

    Experiences from Tampere Library – Julia Niskanen<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Julia Niskanen spoke about what a research data manager actually does within a research project. It was a grounding talk – a reminder that managing research data well is a skill and a service in its own right, not just a checkbox.<\/p>\n

    TCSC Use Cases – Short Pitches<\/strong><\/p>\n

    This was one of the more lively parts of the afternoon. Several researchers gave short pitches on how they use TCSC infrastructure in their own work:<\/p>\n

    Tapio Niemi shared how the Photonics Laboratory uses optics simulation packages – some workflows run fine on a regular computer, but 3D FDTD simulations need a much larger cluster. They also use an open-source tool called Meep for this work.<\/p>\n

    Sergey Kruk spoke about using COMSOL for computational modelling -everything from individual cells to full organs to patient-level cardiovascular models. There was also mention of a tool called POM for in vitro drug testing, disease modelling, and risk assessment.<\/p>\n

    Jan Solanti presented PoCL-Remote, which allows applications to connect with GPU and CPU clusters over Ethernet using OpenCL – a useful piece of infrastructure for distributed computing work.<\/p>\n

    Reza Shafiloo talked about multisided fairness in recommendation systems, an AI research area that requires significant computing resources of its own.<\/p>\n

    Each pitch was short but gave a real sense of how diverse the use cases are from photonics to cardiovascular modelling to AI fairness research.<\/p>\n

    The afternoon discussion sessions covered topics like research data storage and computing needs, the role of RSEs and data managers in research projects, AI – how it’s being used, served, and studied – and what Scientific IT and RSE could look like at Tampere University going forward. Groups then presented their key points and discussed both current realities and future expectations.<\/p>\n

    A Personal Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n

    I found this seminar genuinely valuable, and not just for the technical content. It was an opportunity to meet the people who work behind the scenes to make research possible. We talk a lot about researchers, research groups, postdocs, and PhD students and rightly so but the IT teams, data managers, and software engineers supporting all of that work deserve just as much recognition. As a researcher myself, I came away knowing exactly who to contact when I need computing support, which is something I honestly didn’t have full clarity on before. It’s not a small thing to know who your people are.<\/p>\n

A Day That Reminded Me Who Makes Research Possible - \u201cThe Bio Boss\u201d","og_description":"On 1st April, I attended the TCSC (Tampere Center for Scientific Computing) kick-off seminar at Paidia, Nokia Arena – and I am happy that I went. It is a bit of a change to my normal day. A half-day get-together of researchers, IT staff, and scientists from Tampere and Aalto Universities, all of them united by a topic that is rarely the focus of attention. Here is my try to articulate what the day was really like and what made me remember it. What Was This Seminar About? The event was organized around three connected themes – the TCSC research infrastructure, Scientific IT, and Research Software Engineering (RSE). It sounds very technical on paper, doesn’t it? But if you look at it from the practical side, it was really just about one thing: the people and systems that enable research to be conducted. Not the research itself, but everything underneath it. Opening Words – Professor Matti Nykter\u00a0 The seminar opened with Professor Matti Nykter remarks – Professor of Bioinformatics at Tampere University Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, and the academic lead of TCSC. His opening words really did set the tone for everything that followed. He talked about the long road to building proper high-performance computing infrastructure at university level. This hasn’t happened overnight – about 20 years of effort have gone into it. He walked through three pillars that sit at the heart of this effort: microscopy, Nexus, and TCSC – each one serving different research needs, but all of them kept running through a shared effort between faculties and IT teams. Funding comes from the university, and the encouraging part is that it’s been growing.\u00a0What I really noticed was a reference to Aalto University part in all of this. Aalto Science-IT initiative was launched in 2009 to facilitate computational research infrastructure. Hence, it was among the first Finnish universities to enter this arena. This know-how and way of doing the things has evidently been a source of inspiration for Tampere in the development of its own. Instead of beginning from scratch or operating in isolated silos, Aalto and Tampere universities are both engaging in mutual learning and support – such cross-university collaboration is indeed what the field of this area needs. Introduction to TCSC – Tomi H\u00e4kkinen Tomi H\u00e4kkinen gave an overview of what TCSC actually is and who it serves. The numbers were bigger than I expected – around 90 research groups and approximately 300 users working across machine learning, AI, and simulations. The infrastructure includes NVIDIA GPUs, AI clusters, and a dedicated environment called SDAE for handling sensitive medical data. Tomi was also honest about the current limitations: long-term storage is a challenge, continuous job running is not always possible, and managing resources at this scale is genuinely difficult. But the direction is clear – TCSC is being built to serve a wide audience across research disciplines, and the ambition is there. Keynote: What Is RSE? – Richard Darst, Aalto University Richard Darst from Aalto University delivered the keynote on Research Software Engineering. His talk was one of the most practically useful of the day for me. Research Software Engineers (RSEs) essentially sit between researchers and IT. They help researchers get access to the resources they need, faster than going through traditional IT channels. As he put it simply, time is money in research, and having someone who understands both the research problem and the technical infrastructure makes a real difference. Richard also spoke about how Tampere and Aalto are already collaborating, sharing projects and mentoring each other’s teams. There was also a suggestion raised about a national RSE centre, though the focus for now remains on building this from the ground up at the university level, which makes sense. Scientific IT at Tampere University – Pasi Kyt\u00f6harju Pasi Kyt\u00f6harju gave a clear picture of what Scientific IT covers at Tampere University, essentially the full digital infrastructure of research: data management, software support, secure data processing, shared storage, automation, and the long-term data repository. It’s a wide remit and an important one. Research data management in particular – making sure data is stored properly, handled securely, and can be reused – is something that often gets treated as an afterthought. Hearing it presented as a core service was reassuring. Experiences from Tampere Library – Julia Niskanen Julia Niskanen spoke about what a research data manager actually does within a research project. It was a grounding talk – a reminder that managing research data well is a skill and a service in its own right, not just a checkbox. TCSC Use Cases – Short Pitches This was one of the more lively parts of the afternoon. Several researchers gave short pitches on how they use TCSC infrastructure in their own work: Tapio Niemi shared how the Photonics Laboratory uses optics simulation packages – some workflows run fine on a regular computer, but 3D FDTD simulations need a much larger cluster. They also use an open-source tool called Meep for this work. Sergey Kruk spoke about using COMSOL for computational modelling -everything from individual cells to full organs to patient-level cardiovascular models. There was also mention of a tool called POM for in vitro drug testing, disease modelling, and risk assessment. Jan Solanti presented PoCL-Remote, which allows applications to connect with GPU and CPU clusters over Ethernet using OpenCL – a useful piece of infrastructure for distributed computing work. Reza Shafiloo talked about multisided fairness in recommendation systems, an AI research area that requires significant computing resources of its own. Each pitch was short but gave a real sense of how diverse the use cases are from photonics to cardiovascular modelling to AI fairness research. Group Discussions The afternoon discussion sessions covered topics like research data storage and computing needs, the role of RSEs and data managers in research projects, AI – how it’s being used, served, and studied – and what Scientific IT and RSE could look like at Tampere University going forward. Groups then presented their key points and discussed both current realities and future expectations. A Personal Reflection I found this seminar genuinely valuable, and not just for the technical content. It was an opportunity to meet the people who work behind the scenes to make research possible. We talk a lot about researchers, research groups, postdocs, and PhD students and rightly so but the IT teams, data managers, and software engineers supporting all of that work deserve just as much recognition. As a researcher myself, I came away knowing exactly who to contact when I need computing support, which is something I honestly didn’t have full clarity on before. It’s not a small thing to know who your people are.
